Upcoming Meetings in Amman to Discuss Efforts to Resolve the Sweida Crisis

Informed sources revealed that a delegation of Druze notables from Sweida will visit the Jordanian capital, Amman, in the near future to discuss a roadmap aimed at calming the situation in the province located in southern Syria, amid regional efforts to reach a sustainable settlement.
Local sources said on Sunday that Jordan has firmly rejected the opening of a special border crossing with Sweida, confirming that the Jordanian initiative is based on the principle of Syria’s territorial unity and calls for disarmament in the province and its restriction to the state.
They explained that the proposed roadmap includes guaranteeing the right of members of the Druze community to live safely within a unified Syrian state, noting that there is broad Arab coordination to support efforts to contain the crisis.
These developments come after clashes that occurred in the village of Al-Majdal on Saturday, following an attack carried out by armed groups affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Government on residential villages in Sweida.
The province of Sweida had witnessed fierce clashes in July of last year between armed groups from the Druze community and Bedouin tribes, in addition to factions affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Government, which led to the displacement of a number of residents.
Meanwhile, the spiritual leader (Sheikh al-Aql) of the Druze community in Sweida, Hikmat Al-Hijri, had previously called for what he described as “self-governance,” hinting at the presence of external support for his demands.
