Tight Iraqi Security Measures Along the Border with Syria to Prevent ISIS Infiltration

The Iraqi army announced today, Monday, the deployment of military forces along the western border with Syria, as part of security measures aimed at preventing the infiltration of cells of the Islamic State organization “ISIS” from Syrian territory into Iraq.
Photos published by the Iraqi forces showed the deployment of military units and equipment along the western border strip, amid escalating security concerns in the region.
The Iraqi News Agency (INA) quoted official sources as saying that the deployment of forces came amid growing concern following armed clashes witnessed in areas of northern and eastern Syria between the Syrian Democratic Forces and Damascus, which could create security vacuums exploited by the group’s cells.
The agency added that this step comes within the framework of preemptive efforts taken by the Iraqi forces to prevent any potential infiltration by dormant ISIS elements and to maintain the security and stability of the border areas.
