The resurgence of ISIS attacks raises concerns about its return to activity in Syria.

The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for an attack targeting a patrol of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near the village of Mu’ayzilah in the Deir ez-Zor countryside, last Wednesday, resulting in the injury of two elements. This attack is the third in a week, following other operations that resulted in the loss of four SDF fighters’ lives.

This escalation comes amid increasing activity by the organization since the beginning of 2025, where it has carried out dozens of operations, taking advantage of the desert nature of the region that facilitates the execution of ambushes and rapid withdrawal. This has raised questions about the possibility of the organization receiving internal support, especially after the recent political developments in Syria.

In response, the Syrian Democratic Forces have confirmed intensifying their security operations against ISIS, noting the arrest of dozens of the organization’s elements and foiling additional attacks. The international coalition continues to support these efforts, warning of ongoing security gaps resulting from weak coordination with the new Syrian government.

With the escalation of threats, it is expected that the SDF and the coalition will enhance their security patrols, alongside opening broader investigations to uncover any potential internal support for the organization in a strategically vital region that contains vital oil resources and constitutes about a third of Syria’s territory.
