Syria on the Verge of Indirect Elections to Form Transitional Parliament

Syria is set to hold indirect parliamentary elections on Sunday, marking a key milestone in the transitional phase following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad.
A total of 1,570 candidates are competing for two-thirds of the parliamentary seats through electoral colleges comprising around 6,000 voters, while the remaining one-third of the seats will be appointed by Syria’s transitional Prime Minister, Ahmad Al-Sharaa.
Concerns have been raised over the weak representation of women and minorities, particularly with the exclusion of some Kurdish and Druze areas from the electoral process due to security concerns.
Observers suggest that Al-Sharaa is being urged to use his appointment powers to enhance diversity and ensure broader participation of minorities and women, contributing to the establishment of a more inclusive and democratic political process.
