Syria Investigates Major Corruption Case in the Energy Sector Involving Contracts Worth Billions of Syrian Pounds

The Central Commission for Inspection and Control in Syria has revealed massive financial and technical violations, with values exceeding tens of billions of Syrian pounds, in oil and gas supply contracts signed during the rule of the previous regime.

The official Syrian news agency (SANA) reported that an inspection mission is currently examining the contractual relationship between a public company operating in the oil and gas sector and a public institution for the trade of metals and building materials, following a review of contracts containing more than 2,500 items of high-value materials and equipment.

The investigation showed that the contracting institution relied on secondary suppliers to secure the needs of the oil company’s factories in the Homs desert due to the unavailability of required materials in its warehouses. The commission stated that the technical expert committees involved in the review found significant price discrepancies exceeding 32 billion Syrian pounds, alongside technical violations related to the non-compliance of some materials with the specified standards.

The mission issued precautionary decisions against those involved from the implicated administrations and secondary suppliers, including the provisional seizure of movable and immovable funds and travel bans until the investigations are completed.
