Security Tensions in Idlib Following the Arrest of a Prominent Uzbek Leader Amid Limited Clashes

The city of Idlib witnessed security tensions and limited clashes on Monday between groups of Uzbek fighters and the General Security Directorate forces affiliated with the “Syrian Transitional Government,” following the arrest of one of the most prominent foreign commanders in the area, known as “Abu Dajana al-Uzbeki.”
Security sources told North Press that the tensions date back to last week when a security force carried out a raid targeting a site of migrant fighters in western rural Idlib, resulting in the arrest of “Abu Dajana,” a figure with significant influence among Uzbek fighters who enjoys wide connections among foreign militants in the region.
According to the sources, groups of Uzbek and Turkmen fighters responded to the arrest operation on Monday morning by setting up temporary checkpoints in their controlled areas. Tensions then escalated into intermittent clashes with General Security Directorate personnel on the western outskirts of Idlib city, specifically near the vicinity of the central prison where the arrested commander is held.
The sources confirmed that the clashes were limited to the use of light weapons, while the General Security Directorate dispatched security reinforcements to the area to contain the escalation and prevent its spread to other neighborhoods within the city.
Simultaneously, local notables and intermediaries from foreign fighters attempted to mediate to calm the situation and contain the incident, amid ongoing mutual alertness and heightened tension levels in the western neighborhoods of Idlib, with concerns over the limited clashes potentially escalating into broader confrontations if a swift settlement is not reached.
“Abu Dajana al-Uzbeki” is considered one of the most prominent figures who played a role in organizing Uzbek fighters over the past years in Idlib. Informed sources indicate that his arrest is part of a broader security campaign conducted by the “Transitional Government” authorities against foreign figures accused of violating internal security regulations.
