New tensions between Ramallah and Washington after the failure of negotiations over the Saudi initiative.

A source revealed to i24NEWS that the communications between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and the US administration regarding the Saudi initiative to recognize a Palestinian state ended in failure after a disagreement over conditions for paying salaries to the families of security prisoners.

The source indicated that the goal of the Saudi initiative was to prevent Israel from taking unilateral steps in the Palestinian territories, and that Mahmoud Abbas received promises of “political cover from the Saudis with US support” to protect him from potential Israeli actions such as cutting off clearance systems or annexing land.

However, the channel of communication between Ramallah and Washington failed after the US insisted on refraining from paying salaries to the families of security prisoners, which led to the halt of negotiations after three months of intense efforts.

The source added that the White House issued directives that prevented Palestinians from entering New York, which affected the Saudi stance towards Ramallah.

The source also pointed out that the US administration imposed a veto on any Israeli intention to cut off clearance systems between banks, while Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu did not discuss the matter due to US directives.

The source confirmed that the growing recognition of the Palestinian state by several countries prompted Israel to intensify its operations in Gaza, with continued tension in relations between the Palestinian Authority and the US team due to Trump’s previous opposition to the “Deal of the Century”.

It is expected that Mahmoud Abbas will deliver a remote speech at the United Nations in the coming days after the US sanctions.
