Netanyahu: Security Arrangements Required Before Any Understanding with Damascus

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed today that Israel seeks to establish a demilitarized zone extending from the Syrian capital, Damascus, to Mount Hermon, stressing that any potential agreement with the Syrian side must take into account the “Israeli security principles.”

During a visit to Sheba Medical Center accompanied by soldiers from the 55th Brigade who were injured in an exchange of fire inside Syrian territory, Netanyahu said that Israel is “determined to defend the Israeli towns near the border, including the northern border.”

He added that “what is required from Syria is the establishment of a demilitarized buffer zone from Damascus to the buffer zone, and from the entrances to the summit of Mount Hermon,” adding that Israel retains these areas to ensure “the security of Israeli citizens.” He noted that “it is possible to reach an agreement with the Syrians” if goodwill exists, while emphasizing Israel’s adherence to its security principles “under all circumstances.”

The statement comes after the Israeli army announced that its forces deployed along the border are in a high state of readiness, whether for defense or to respond to any potential developments in Syria and Lebanon.

The U.S. president had called on Monday for the Israeli government to avoid taking any actions that might hinder the political transition process in Syria.
