Multiple Fires Threaten Syrian Forests Amid Firefighting Challenges

Several fires broke out in the forests of Tartous and Hama governorates on September 22, 2025, in the latest wave of seasonal fires affecting the Syrian coast. This prompted the Civil Defense teams to a full state of mobilization despite field difficulties related to rough terrain and lack of water sources.
Tartous and Wadi al-Nasara
In the western countryside of Tartous, a large fire erupted in the woodlands between the villages of Namriya, Al-Asaliyah, and Arqoub Salman in the Sheikh Badr subdistrict, spreading to adjacent forested areas. Fires were also recorded in the Wadi al-Nasara area between the villages of Aqr Zayti and Al-Mazra’a (Al-Balan roundabout) near the town of Habnamra.
Al-Ghab Plain – Hama
In the western countryside of Hama, a fire broke out in the Al-Fawar area of Deir Shamil in the Masyaf subdistrict, where firefighting teams faced additional difficulties due to the presence of mines and war remnants that hampered intervention efforts.
Ongoing Challenges
These fires come after a series of previous waves that destroyed thousands of hectares of forests, amid continuing suspicions that some fires may have been deliberately set, in addition to the impact of rising temperatures in the region.
