Jordanian Army Thwarts Two Drug Smuggling Attempts Using Balloons from Syria

The Jordanian Army announced on Monday that it had thwarted two attempts to smuggle a large quantity of narcotic substances from Syrian territory using balloons directed by primitive devices.

In a statement published on its official website, the army said that the Eastern Military Zone was able at dawn today, within its area of responsibility, to detect, track, and down the balloons inside Jordanian territory, in coordination with the security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department.

The statement clarified that the seized materials were handed over to the competent authorities to take the necessary legal measures, noting that the detection operations took place at two different locations along the Jordanian-Syrian border.

This incident comes amid an increase in drug smuggling attempts across the Kingdom’s northern border in recent months, with smugglers employing new and advanced methods, including drones and balloons, to bypass monitoring points.

The Jordanian Army consistently affirms its commitment to countering any attempts of smuggling or infiltration across its borders, stressing that its forces will deal “with full strength and firmness” with any threat targeting Jordan’s security and stability.
