Jordan and Germany: Any International Force in Gaza Must Have a UN Security Council Mandate

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul stressed the need for any proposed international force to be deployed in the Gaza Strip to have a mandate from the United Nations Security Council, in order to ensure its legitimacy and effectiveness in carrying out its mission.

Speaking at the Manama Dialogue Forum in the Bahraini capital, Safadi stated that “all parties agree that a stabilization force must be mandated by the UN Security Council in order to perform its role effectively,” emphasizing that Jordan will not send troops to participate in this force, despite taking part in the monitoring center established by the United States near Gaza to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

For his part, the German foreign minister said the force “needs a clear legal basis within the framework of international law,” noting that this is essential both for the countries that may contribute troops and for the Palestinians themselves. He added that Germany supports a clear UN mandate for the mission.

The remarks come amid ongoing international efforts to consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza, which came into effect on October 10 under Egyptian, Qatari, and U.S. mediation.
