Jordan: 1.4 Million Syrian Refugees and Warning of a Potential New Displacement Wave

Jordan’s Interior Minister, Mazen Al-Faraya, stated that the country is currently hosting approximately 1.4 million Syrian refugees, noting that fewer than 100,000 of them reside in refugee camps, while the majority live in cities and urban areas.
In press remarks today, Al-Faraya explained that voluntary return rates to Syria remain limited due to the “absence of a safe and conducive environment” for repatriation. He also warned of the potential for a new wave of displacement “if the opportunity for stability inside Syria is lost.”
The minister affirmed that Jordan continues to coordinate with the Syrian side on border control and the fight against drug and weapons smuggling, pointing out that Jordanian authorities have seized around 8 million Captagon pills since the beginning of the year during joint operations.
