Iraqi Ministry of Justice: Drone attacks pose a security threat to Abu Ghraib Prison

The Iraqi Ministry of Justice warned on Sunday night of risks threatening the security of Al-Karkh Central Prison, known as “Abu Ghraib,” as a result of repeated drone attacks in its vicinity.

In a statement, the ministry said that the areas surrounding Baghdad International Airport and Al-Karkh Central Prison had been subjected in recent days to several attacks, some of which were close to the prison. It noted that these attacks could raise concerns about the security of the facility, which houses dangerous prisoners convicted of terrorism cases.

The ministry added that the fall of projectiles near the prison’s perimeter could pose a risk to the precautionary measures and approved security plans designed to protect it, and could also lead to damage to the facility’s infrastructure.

Al-Karkh Central Prison is located next to Baghdad International Airport, near the U.S. Victoria Base. According to press reports, the prison holds a number of members of the Islamic State organization “ISIS” who were transferred from Syria to Iraq.
