International Coalition Refocuses on Syria, Reduces Forces in Iraq

The U.S.-led international coalition announced the continuation of its operations to combat ISIS in Syria, while reducing its military presence in Iraq and strengthening its bases in northeastern Syria to support local forces.

This move is part of the coalition’s plan to transition to bilateral security partnerships by September 2025, according to a joint U.S.–Iraqi statement issued in 2024.

The coalition aims through these steps to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, amid growing concerns over escalating threats following the fall of the Assad regime, while continuing joint operations against remnants of the terrorist group.
