Indirect Syrian-Israeli Dialogue at the United Nations

The head of the Syrian Interim Government, Ahmed Al-Shar’a, held a meeting with Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, at the Syrian mission headquarters to the United Nations in New York, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the General Assembly.

Lauder described the meeting on the social media platform X as “very positive,” noting that the discussion touched on the issue of normalizing relations between Syria and Israel.

It is worth mentioning that Lauder, who is of Syrian descent, previously participated in indirect negotiations between Damascus and Tel Aviv during the 1990s, at which time he expressed his rejection of Israeli expansions in the Golan Heights.

According to observers, the meeting reflects the beginning of initial diplomatic efforts amid the current regional tensions.
