Homs University Students Object to New Transportation Measures

Students from Tartus and Latakia who study at Homs University appealed to the concerned authorities to reverse a decision stipulating that buses coming from the coast must stop at the city’s northern station, instead of continuing to the university campus or student housing.

The students said that the decision, which was recently implemented, has increased their time and financial burdens, as they are forced to use additional means of transportation to reach the university. They pointed out that the distance between the northern station and the campus is estimated at about 8 kilometers and takes between 45 minutes to an hour via internal transport.

A number of students indicated that the decision has affected their regular attendance and their ability to reach exams, while those residing in student housing face additional difficulties in transporting personal belongings.

Students also expressed security concerns related to the daily commute to and from the northern station, especially in light of the security tensions the city has witnessed in recent periods.

The students explained that the decision forces them to leave their homes early and increases transportation costs, calling for reconsidering it or suspending it temporarily “until field conditions improve.”

The concerned authorities have not yet issued an official clarification regarding the reasons for the decision or the possibility of amending it.
