Damascus Signs Agreements to Build Power Plants with a Total Capacity of 5,000 Megawatts

Syria’s Ministry of Energy has signed final agreements for the construction and operation of power generation plants with a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts, with a consortium led by Orbacon Holding, marking the start of the implementation phase aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the agreements include the establishment of four combined-cycle gas power plants in Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor, Zayzoun, and Mahrada, in addition to four solar power plants in Wadi al-Rabee, Deir ez-Zor, Aleppo, and Homs.

Syrian Minister of Energy Mohammed al-Bashir said the projects represent “a qualitative leap in the development of the electricity sector and will help meet the growing demand for energy while supporting the stability of the national grid.”

He added that the new plants will create thousands of jobs and promote sustainable economic development in the concerned provinces.

This step follows memorandums of understanding signed last May with several international companies to develop projects in the fields of gas and solar energy, with a total value estimated at around $7 billion.
