A New Diplomatic Chapter: Al-Sharaa’s Visit to Washington

Syrian Interim Prime Minister Ahmad Al-Sharaa arrived in Washington on Sunday morning, September 21, 2025, on an official visit—the first by a Syrian leader in more than fifty years—marking a historic step in diplomatic relations between Syria and the United States.

Al-Sharaa is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes four ministers, among them Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, as well as senior officials from the Ministries of Economy, Reconciliation, and International Affairs. The five-day visit will feature meetings with senior American officials, in addition to Al-Sharaa’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Later this evening, Al-Sharaa is also expected to meet members of the Syrian community in the United States in what has been described as an “emotional” gathering, where he will outline the Syrian government’s future vision, plans for reform and openness, and efforts to strengthen ties with the Syrian diaspora abroad.
