The desecration of the Martyrs’ Shrine in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor has sparked public outrage.

The Martyrs’ Shrine in the town of al-Kassar, in the rural areas of Deir ez-Zor, which is dedicated to fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces who were killed during operations against ISIS, has been subjected to systematic acts of vandalism, triggering widespread anger among local residents and the families of the fallen.

Circulating video footage has revealed the extent of the damage inflicted on the cemetery, including the breaking of several gravestones and the defacement of others. Residents have described these actions as a violation of the sanctity of the dead and an affront to the feelings of their families.

Locals have called on the relevant authorities to open an urgent investigation and hold those responsible accountable, in line with principles of respect for human dignity and the protection of burial sites.

This incident comes amid similar cases reported in several Syrian regions following the entry of factions affiliated with the transitional government, including Afrin, Sheikh Maqsoud, Manbij, al-Shaddadi, Tal Hamis, and Raqqa, where acts of vandalism targeting cemeteries and shrines have been documented.

Observers believe that such behavior echoes practices previously carried out by ISIS, which destroyed graves and shrines under the pretext of religious nonconformity—highlighting the ongoing threat to the sanctity of burial sites and martyrs’ memorials in conflict-affected areas.
