Flash Floods and Torrential Flooding Hit Areas in Northeastern Syria

The effects of the strong low-pressure system that began early on Saturday, March 14, continued, as areas in northeastern Syria—particularly the provinces of Al-Hasakah, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor—witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, leading to the formation of powerful torrents and flooding in a number of towns and villages.

Al-Hasakah:

Areas in the countryside of Sari Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), the town of Al-Attala, and the village of Al-Gharra that belongs to AbdulAziz Mountain in the southwest of the province witnessed strong torrents that flooded agricultural lands and damaged a number of homes and roads. Displacement camps north of Al-Hasakah were also affected, including the Washokani and Sari Kaniye camps, where temporary shelters suffered significant damage, amid increasing hardship for children, the sick, and the elderly.

Raqqa:

Floods and torrents struck the town of Hazeema north of the city and several rural areas, causing damage to dozens of homes and flooding parts of agricultural lands. In eastern Raqqa countryside, four children from two families died after the roof of a mud house collapsed due to heavy rainfall. The floods also destroyed a vital bridge in the province’s countryside, increasing the isolation of some areas and making access more difficult.

Deir El-Zor:

Flooding occurred on Omar Street (Six Minus a Quarter Street) near Abu Abed Mosque inside the city. Torrents were also recorded in several areas along the administrative border between Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor.

Semalka Crossing:

The Semalka–Faysh Khabur crossing, which connects to the Kurdistan Region, went out of service due to the rise in the water level of the Tigris River as a result of heavy rainfall.

International Road M4:

Due to the overflow of the Khabur River, the road was completely cut off to vehicle movement and transport trucks on the M4 international road. The international road used for goods and passenger transport was therefore disrupted, forcing vehicles to use alternative routes to cross the river.

Warnings

The situation remains evolving as of this morning, with some rainfall continuing in the eastern regions, amid calls for residents to exercise caution regarding water Gathering and the possibility of additional collapses.
