Assad’s Officers in Lebanon… Metri Calls for an Investigation and Warns of a Threat to Syria’s Security

Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri expressed his concern over circulating reports regarding the movements of officers and elements from the former Syrian regime inside Lebanese territory.

Mitri affirmed, in a statement via the “X” platform, that Lebanese security agencies must verify the accuracy of these reports and take the necessary measures, stressing that it is the duty of the state to prevent any activity that could undermine Syria’s unity or threaten its security and stability, whether carried out from within Lebanon or originating from it.

Mitri called for strengthening coordination with the Syrian authorities, based on mutual respect for the sovereignty of both countries, in a manner that serves shared interests and prevents the use of Lebanese territory for hostile acts.

The stance of the Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister comes after Al Jazeera broadcast leaked documents and recordings it said belong to senior officers in the former Syrian army, containing discussions about movements aimed at targeting the new transitional government in Syria.

According to the documents, Major General Suheil al-Hassan, the former commander of elite forces in the Syrian regime’s army, worked on preparing a headquarters in the al-Haysa area inside Lebanese territory, near the border with Syria, to be used as a center for directing potential military operations against Damascus.

The leaks also revealed details related to the organizational structure of a group led by Rami Makhlouf, in addition to information about the forces and equipment it possesses inside and outside Syria, while the dates mentioned in the recordings indicate the period extending between April and December 2025.
