Washington Designates Branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Organizations

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order designating several branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan as “Foreign Terrorist Organizations.”

The text of the executive order stated that these branches are accused of committing, facilitating, or supporting acts of violence and activities considered threatening to stability and to the interests of the United States and its citizens.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, welcomed the decision, describing it as “an important step” for Israel and for a number of Arab countries that say they have been harmed by the group’s activities.

French President Emmanuel Macron had called on his government last May to prepare proposals to address what he described as the influence of the Brotherhood and “political Islam” in France, amid a domestic debate over the impact of these groups on social cohesion.
