Heavy Rainfall Worsens Conditions for Displaced People in Washokani Camp

Heavy rainfall that hit the city of Hasakah in recent hours caused water to enter several tents of displaced people from Serekaniye (Ras al-Ain) in the Washokani Camp, leading to damage to temporary shelters and deteriorating living conditions for large segments of the camp’s residents.
Residents of the camp said that the rainfall resulted in the formation of water puddles inside the pathways and between the tents, hindering the movement of families—especially children and the elderly—while water seeped into tents already damaged due to worn-out fabric and declining durability at the onset of winter.
According to local sources, the camp suffers from weak infrastructure and a decline in service levels amid insufficient international support, with most aid relying on the efforts of the Autonomous Administration and local organizations. Residents are calling for improved basic services and the replacement of old tents that have not been changed for years.
Displaced people in the camp affirm their desire to return to their areas in Serekaniye (Ras al-Ain), demanding international guarantees for a safe return. The Autonomous Administration established Washokani Camp in October 2019 following the Turkish military operation that displaced tens of thousands of residents.
