Meeting Between Al-Shar’a and Trump Discusses Implementation of the March 10 Agreement and Economic and Security Files

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi, said on Tuesday that the head of Syria’s transitional government, Ahmad Al-Shar’a, and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, discussed during their bilateral meeting the implementation of the March 10 Agreement signed between the transitional government and Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

In an interview with Al-Ikhbariya Al-Souriya channel, Alabi described the meeting between the Syrian and U.S. presidents as “historic” for several reasons, noting that “many issues were discussed, most notably economic matters and the role of the United States in supporting direct investments, as well as the lifting of the remaining sanctions imposed by the U.S. Congress.”

The Syrian envoy added that “President Trump lifted all sanctions he had the authority to suspend and affirmed that he would personally follow up with members of Congress to explore possible actions regarding this matter.”

The meeting also addressed, according to Alabi, “aspects related to the security agreement with Israel and the U.S. role in supporting the implementation of this agreement in a way that ensures the safety of Syrians and enables opportunities for development and reconstruction.”

He noted that the meeting took place “amid numerous regional developments over the past few months” and that “it lasted longer than scheduled due to the wide range of topics discussed.”

Alabi said that “the meeting turned into an expanded working session, during which President Trump instructed his Secretary of State to meet with his Syrian counterpart, As’ad Al-Shaybani, and several ministers, with the participation of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, to discuss mechanisms for implementing the agreements and turning them into practical plans.”

He added that the meeting also touched briefly on “Syria’s potential accession to the international coalition against the Islamic State organization, with discussions on this issue to be continued during the next ministerial meeting.”
