Syrian Interim President Ahmad al-Shar’a Arrives in Washington on Official Visit

Syrian Interim President Ahmad al-Shar’a arrived in the United States on an official visit — the first of its kind since the formation of the interim government in Damascus — according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

During the visit, al-Shar’a is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and several senior officials in the American administration to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues of mutual concern.

The visit comes days after Washington removed al-Shar’a and his Interior Minister, Anas Khattab, from the U.S. and international sanctions lists — a move seen as paving the way for reopening political communication channels between the two countries.

Analysts said the talks will focus on counter-ISIS efforts, the future of detention camps in northeastern Syria, issues related to the withdrawal of foreign fighters, the protection of minority rights, and the possible resumption of regional peace negotiations.

U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Brack had earlier praised the steps taken by the Syrian interim government, describing its performance as “moving in the right direction toward stability and institutional rebuilding.”

Al-Shar’a’s visit to Washington marks a significant political event, being the first by a Syrian president in more than two decades, and reflects — according to observers — signs of a gradual diplomatic opening between Damascus and Washington after years of estrangement.
