Iraqi Prime Minister: Coalition Withdrawal a Prerequisite for Bringing All Weapons Under State Control

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani affirmed in an interview published Monday that Iraq is committed to bringing all weapons under state control, but noted that this will not be possible as long as the U.S.-led international coalition remains in the country — a presence some Iraqi factions still regard as an occupation force.

Al-Sudani explained that a plan is in place for the withdrawal of the anti-ISIS coalition by September 2026, noting that the threat posed by extremist groups has significantly diminished.

He said: “ISIS no longer exists. Security and stability? Thank God, they are ensured. Give me one reason for the presence of 86 countries in the coalition,” referring to the number of nations that joined the alliance when it was established in 2014.

The Prime Minister added: “There will be a clear program to end any weapons outside the state’s institutions. This is everyone’s demand,” clarifying that some factions may be integrated into the official security forces or continue their activities in the political sphere after relinquishing their arms.
