New U.S. Envoy to Iraq Officially Assumes His Duties

U.S. Special Envoy to Iraq Mark Savaya announced on Sunday that he has officially assumed his duties, following his appointment by U.S. President Donald Trump last October.
In a post on the platform X, Savaya said: “Thanks to the wise leadership of President Donald Trump, Iraq is back on the map,” adding, “Now I begin my mission… Let’s make Iraq great again.”
Savaya is the third U.S. special envoy to Iraq, after Paul Bremer, who held the position following the U.S. invasion in 2003, and Brett McGurk, who served during the war against ISIS in 2014.
Savaya had previously stated that his mission will focus on “rebuilding trust and strengthening the strategic partnership between Baghdad and Washington,” noting that relations between the two countries are going through a stage “that requires direct and sincere engagement serving the interests of both peoples.”
