Türkiye: 550,000 Syrian Refugees Have Returned Home Since December 2024

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Saturday that around 550,000 Syrian refugees have returned to Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.
Yerlikaya explained that the number of Syrian refugees currently residing in Türkiye stands at approximately 2.4 million, after having exceeded 3.5 million at the height of the Syrian war, according to data from the Turkish Ministry of Interior.
In a recent report, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) stated that about 1.16 million Syrians have returned to their country since December 8, 2024, while more than 1.9 million internally displaced persons have returned to their original areas within Syria.
The UNHCR added that more than seven million people remain displaced within Syrian territory, while about 4.5 million others continue to live as refugees abroad, most of them in neighboring countries.
These figures come amid political and security transformations taking place in Syria since the ouster of the former regime, alongside regional and international efforts to restore stability and create conditions for the safe and voluntary return of refugees.
