Talabani: Kurdish Rights in Syria Must Be Safeguarded in the New Constitution

Bafel Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), emphasized the need to protect the rights of all components in Syria, stressing that the rights of the Kurdish people must be clearly safeguarded within the new Syrian constitution.
During his meeting on Tuesday in Sulaymaniyah with the Russian Ambassador to Iraq, Elbrus Kutrashev, Talabani discussed developments in Syria, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region, highlighting the importance of respecting the distinct identity of Kurdish areas in Syria.
Talabani stated, “The specificity of Rojava must be respected, and the rights of our people must be protected within the framework of the new Syrian constitution, which we hope will be inclusive of all components.” He underscored that ensuring equal rights for everyone is the key to achieving lasting stability and peace in the region.
The meeting also addressed the general situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, with both sides stressing the importance of maintaining constructive dialogue among political forces to overcome crises and strengthen security and stability across the Middle East.
In addition, the two parties emphasized the need to hold transparent and fair elections in Iraq that ensure equitable representation for all citizens and contribute to advancing political and economic development.
