Rising Crime Rates in Damascus and Its Countryside Spark Security Concerns

Since the beginning of this year, the governorates of Damascus and Rural Damascus have witnessed a noticeable increase in various criminal cases, both in the types of incidents and the motives of the perpetrators, reflecting a fragile security reality that places residents before daily challenges.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 66 criminal murders have been documented since the start of the year, resulting in the deaths of 76 people, including men, women, and children. The victims were distributed as follows:

Damascus: 27 crimes resulting in 29 deaths (19 men, 7 women, and 3 children).

Rural Damascus: 39 crimes resulting in 47 deaths (38 men, 4 women, and 5 children).

The crimes varied between personal disputes, profit-driven or revenge-motivated assaults, with some incidents marked by notable levels of violence. Residents have expressed their fears over the limited responsiveness and monitoring by security authorities, calling for urgent action to curb these crimes and restore a sense of safety.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights continues to document acts of violence on an ongoing basis, emphasizing the need for relevant authorities to follow up on these cases to ensure the protection of civilians and the improvement of the security situation in the region.
