U.S. Chamber of Commerce Urges Congress to Repeal Caesar Act to Support Syrian Economy

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday called on the U.S. Congress to take urgent action to repeal the Caesar Act sanctions imposed on Syria, arguing that doing so would support regional stability and enhance the United States’ economic interests.

In an official statement, the Chamber said that repealing the law would provide real economic opportunities for both the Syrian people and American companies, by facilitating investments in the energy, infrastructure, and reconstruction sectors.

It noted that the continued restrictions under the Caesar Act, enacted in 2019, limit the ability of American companies to compete in regional markets, warning that the “commercial vacuum” caused by the sanctions gives an advantage to competitors from other countries.

This new position comes amid growing debates in Washington over the effectiveness of U.S. sanctions in achieving their political goals, while economic reports have indicated that more than 100 American companies support a comprehensive review of the sanctions on Syria before the end of the current legislative session.
