UN Commission of Inquiry Continues Field Visit in Suwayda to Investigate July Events

The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria continues its field tour in Suwayda province for the third consecutive day, as part of its efforts to investigate the events that have taken place in the region since mid-July.

Local sources reported that members of the Commission met with relatives of victims and residents of villages that were subjected to attacks and acts of violence. They listened to firsthand testimonies from locals and eyewitnesses about what occurred. The visits include the homes of those affected and sites where extrajudicial killings and grave violations were documented.

Local correspondents indicated that the Commission is recording testimonies both in audio and video formats, in addition to written documentation. Media outlets are not permitted to attend the meetings to preserve the confidentiality of the process.

The Commission had concluded its first visit to Suwayda on October 8, following tours of the city and several neighboring villages. In a previous statement, it expressed gratitude for the facilitation of its mission, affirming that its fieldwork would continue “in accordance with standards of independence and respect for confidentiality.”
