Schools and Markets Closed in Syrian Coast Amid Protests Over Security Situation

Various areas in the Syrian coast, as well as in Homs and Hama provinces, witnessed a widespread strike on Sunday, involving the closure of schools, markets, and shops, alongside an almost complete halt of traffic and public transportation. These actions come amid escalating popular protests against the deteriorating security situation and the continued incidents of kidnappings and assaults.

These popular movements follow extensive campaigns on social media platforms calling for students to be kept home from school due to security concerns. Local sources reported that official authorities exerted pressure on families to send their children back to school, including threats of punitive measures against those who refuse, such as expulsion and even death threats, according to the sources.

Public anger has intensified in recent days following two incidents that caused widespread shock: the killing of teacher Layal Gharib in front of her school in Homs city, and the kidnapping of the child Mohammed Qais Haidar from in front of his school in Latakia province by unknown armed men. No progress has been reported in the investigations or arrests of suspects.

The transitional government in Syria faces growing criticism from residents in these areas for what is described as “inability to restore security” or take concrete steps to hold those involved accountable for the recent surge in such incidents.

No official statements have yet been issued regarding the strike or the recent security incidents, while tensions remain high amid popular calls to continue the strike until residents’ demands for protection and justice are met.
