Syria Holds First Parliamentary Elections Since the Fall of the Former Regime

On Sunday morning, voting began in Syria’s first legislative elections since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, with members of the electoral bodies casting their ballots at polling stations across several provinces except in Sweida and areas of northern and eastern Syria.

The electoral process is taking place under heightened security to monitor and safeguard polling stations. Nawar Najmeh, spokesperson for the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections, stated that voting started at 9:00 a.m. and will continue until 12:00 noon, with the possibility of extension until 4:00 p.m.

Najmeh explained that the voting procedure involves presenting identification documents, receiving election cards, and casting ballots in secret voting rooms. The ballot boxes will later be opened publicly to begin the counting process, with preliminary results announced through the media.

Around 6,000 members of regional electoral bodies are participating in the elections, while the Supreme Committee has approved 1,570 candidates who presented their programs over the past week.

Media reports highlighted the weakness of candidates campaigning efforts, noting a noticeable absence of posters and billboards in major cities.
