Iranian Parliament Considers Withdrawal from Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

The spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian Parliament, Ebrahim Rezaei, announced that the council has prepared a draft legislation that could pave the way for Tehran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, in response to the re-imposition of UN sanctions on the country.
The Iranian news agency Tasnim quoted Rezaei on Monday saying that the parliament “sees no justification for Iran to remain a member of the treaty” under the current circumstances, noting that the draft legislation is still in preparation and has not yet been officially added to the council’s agenda.
This move follows recent American and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June, and the subsequent reactivation of international sanctions against Tehran earlier this week.
Iran, for its part, asserts that it does not seek to manufacture nuclear weapons and considers its nuclear program to be exclusively for peaceful purposes.
