Nayrab Camp: Young Man Was Killed and Widespread Arrests

This morning, a large-scale security campaign was carried out by the Syrian Interim Government forces in Nayrab Palestinian refugee camp in Aleppo, resulting in the arrest of more than 20 people, including relatives of a Palestinian young man who was killed by security personnel last Friday.

Local sources stated that the campaign followed hours after a curfew was imposed on the camp, triggered by the kidnapping and stabbing of two “Public Security” members by unknown assailants in retaliation for the killing of the Palestinian youth.

Armored vehicles and military equipment entered the camp and spread across its surroundings and main streets, while residents were ordered to stay indoors until the security operations concluded.

The camp had witnessed rising tensions during the funeral of the killed young man, where some attendees chanted slogans offensive to the Syrian revolution, Syria, and the Free Syrian Army, which was rejected and condemned by other residents who affirmed that those chants did not represent them.

According to human rights sources, the Palestinian youth lost his life due to direct gunfire by security forces, which sparked public outrage and led to a heavy security presence in the camp’s streets and a temporary curfew until the burial.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights called for a transparent and independent investigation into the killing and the prosecution of those responsible. It warned of the deteriorating security situation in the camp threatening civilians’ lives and urged the strengthening of popular and community oversight mechanisms to protect Palestinian refugees in Syria.
