US: Comprehensive Syrian Government Expected Before End of 2025

US Envoy to Syria, Tom Barak, said that his country expects the formation of a comprehensive central government in Syria before the end of this year. He emphasized that the United States does not see federalism as a solution to the Syrian crisis.

In an interview with Rudaw network yesterday, Thursday, Barak clarified that the upcoming government is supposed to guarantee the rights of all components and minorities. He stressed that US support includes Syrian Kurds and other components without imposing any dictates.

He added: “We guide and help, but we do not impose an American or European model on Syrians.”

Barak touched on the recent events in Sweida, describing them as “unfortunate” and confirming that Washington is working to prevent their recurrence.

He also pointed out that the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan was “better than great,” where both sides discussed ways to support the formation of a comprehensive Syrian government. Barak noted that Ankara showed understanding for the US role.

In parallel, Trump revealed that he is about to issue a “major announcement regarding Syria” without providing further details, suffice to say that lifting sanctions on Damascus came to give Syrians room to breathe after years of strict restrictions.

These developments come amid a significant shift in US policy towards Syria. Trump had previously announced in May his intention to lift sanctions, before signing an executive order in June to formally end the sanctions program.

This coincided with the historic visit of Syrian Transitional President Ahmed Al-Shara’ to the United States and his participation in the UN General Assembly, in a first-of-its-kind appearance in decades, amid parallel US efforts to push for a ceasefire agreement between Syria and Israel, alongside intensive consultations with Ankara on security and military files.
