U.S. Announces End of Temporary Protected Status for Syrian Migrants

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced that the United States will terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) granted to Syrian migrants since 2012.
According to the government notice, the decision will affect more than six thousand Syrians legally residing under this status.
Department spokesperson Tricia McLellan stated in a press release:
“The conditions in Syria no longer prevent its citizens from returning home. Syria has been a hotspot for extremism and terrorism for nearly twenty years, and allowing Syrians to remain in our country is contrary to our national interest.”
The statement clarified that Syrians covered by TPS have 60 days to voluntarily leave the United States, after which they will be subject to arrest or deportation.
