Iraqi Security Source: Baghdad Supplied Damascus with Information That Foiled Assassination Plot Against Ahmad Al-Sharaa

A senior Iraqi security source told the Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar on Friday that Iraqi intelligence provided detailed information to its Syrian counterpart that helped thwart an assassination plot targeting Ahmad Al-Sharaa, the head of the Syrian interim government.

The source, who requested anonymity, stated that “close intelligence cooperation between Baghdad and Damascus led to the foiling of the assassination plans,” according to the newspaper.

The source also mentioned that several fighters from what he described as “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” defected from the organization in protest against Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s policies after he assumed power following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Some of these fighters reportedly participated in security plots before being detected and tracked by intelligence agencies.
