Pedersen Calls for Political and Security Reforms to Ensure Transition in Syria

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, stated during a session before the UN Security Council that establishing a successful political transition in Syria requires the creation of a state that represents all its components, through practical measures that guarantee freedom of expression and genuine political participation—not just theoretical statements.
Pedersen warned that the deep divisions and lack of trust between the parties necessitate tangible confidence-building steps, including reforming the security apparatus, disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of fighters. He also emphasized that the threat of extremist groups remains, urging countries around the world to facilitate the evacuation of their nationals from Al-Hol camp.
On the issue of justice, the UN envoy stressed that transitional justice mechanisms are essential to the success of the political process, and expressed the United Nations’ readiness to support the work of justice committees and the search for the missing. He called for comprehensive legislative elections that ensure fair representation for all Syrians and respect national diversity.
Pedersen also urged the transitional government to take clear positions and actions regarding recorded violations in areas such as the coast and Sweida. He added that any security concerns should be addressed through legal frameworks and international agreements, noting that the continued Israeli military operations inside Syrian territory are “unacceptable” and require diplomatic dialogue within the framework of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
