The Supreme Legal Committee in As-Suwayda Rejects Syrian Foreign Ministry Statement and Calls for Independent International Investigation

Rejection and Demand for International Accountability

The Supreme Legal Committee in As-Suwayda issued a statement responding to the announcement made by the Syrian Foreign Ministry following a meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani, his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, and U.S. envoy Thomas Barrack regarding the “roadmap to resolve the As-Suwayda crisis.”

The committee affirmed its rejection of the declared approach, considering that the ministry’s statement does not reflect the government’s responsibility for previous violations. It called on the international community to ensure an independent investigation and establish international accountability mechanisms free from “government domination.”

Criticism of the Government’s Role

The statement pointed out that the government is trying to portray itself as a neutral party, whereas, according to the committee, it was directly involved in violations affecting thousands of civilians during the events of July 2025, including deaths, disappearances, and kidnappings. The committee also viewed the national judiciary as “politicized” and incapable of providing fair trials.

Warning Against “Internal Fragmentation”

The statement referred to attempts of “internal fragmentation” through the proposal of local councils or joint police forces, considering this an attempt to impose new guardianship and sow discord among the province’s residents.

Right to Self-Determination

The committee emphasized the right of the people of As-Suwayda to freely and independently determine their fate, whether through self-administration or secession, as a means to protect their security and dignity.

Call to the International Community

The committee concluded its statement by appealing to the United Nations and the UN Security Council not to recognize any arrangements forcibly imposed on the people, to support the right of the people of As-Suwayda to self-determination, and to ensure an independent investigation and international accountability mechanisms.
