Trump Threatens Major Sanctions on Moscow if NATO Stops Buying Russian Oil

Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced his readiness to impose significant economic sanctions on Russia, provided that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states collectively commit to stopping the purchase of Russian oil, which is one of the main sources of funding for the war in Ukraine.
Trump said in a post on his platform “Truth Social” that the continued purchase of energy from Moscow by some NATO countries is “shocking,” stressing that it “weakens the alliance’s negotiating position and prolongs the war.” He added, “I’m ready to act when you are ready. Just say when.”
Call for Tariffs on China and India
Trump proposed that NATO impose tariffs ranging between 50% and 100% on China and India due to their purchase of Russian oil, with these tariffs to be lifted once the war ends. He justified this by saying that Beijing “has strong influence over Moscow,” and that stringent economic measures “will break its grip and speed up the end of the war.”
“Wasting Time”
Trump warned that any delay by NATO in implementing his proposals would mean “wasting the United States’ time, money, and energy,” emphasizing that collective economic pressure is the way to save lives and end what he described as the “bloody and foolish war.”
Background
Trump’s statements come at a time when the Financial Times reported that Washington is considering pressuring the Group of Seven (G7) countries to impose high tariffs on China and India for the same reason, as part of efforts to increase pressure on Russia and push it towards peace negotiations with Ukraine.
