Gradual Increase in the Return of Syrian Refugees from Germany Amid Continued New Asylum Requests

The German News Agency reported that the number of Syrian refugees returning from Germany to their homeland since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024 is gradually increasing. By the end of August 2025, 1,867 Syrians had returned with federal assistance, compared to 804 by the end of May. Returnees are supported through state-level programs or international schemes such as REAG/GARP, which provide financial aid of up to €3,500 per family.

Despite this rise, asylum applications continue; approximately 17,650 Syrians submitted new protection requests from January to August 2025, amid ongoing political and economic instability inside Syria. German authorities confirmed that decisions on these applications are currently made only in exceptional cases, with close monitoring of the field situation.
